The Palm Pre will go on sale at your local Best Buy, Sprint, Radio Shack, and Walmart stores on June 6, 2009 for $199 with the activation of a 2-year Sprint contract. This mobile device promises to be an all-in-one marvel, one that plans on going straight after the Apple iPhone. Over the past few months, several manufacturers have released their own attempts at bringing down the house that Apple built, but as of now, none have succeeded.
There has been the Samsung Instinct, LG Voyager, Samsung Omnia, and most recently, the RIM Blackberry Storm. All of them have done relatively well, but none of them have truly taken a legitimate stab at iPhone sales. These phones often had glitchy software, poor data speed, and mediocre performance in general. The best thing about the iPhone is that it does almost everything extremely well.
So will Palm’s Pre mobile device stand any chance against the awesome Apple? Only time will tell. The Pre comes with a beautiful looking touch screen display, and a slide out keyboard that angles slightly upward to increase ease of view. The speed of the processor seems on par with the competition as well.
Palm has already announced that they anticipate potential problems with the initial sale of the device due to excess demand and a shortage of supply. There currently are estimates out there that state that Palm plans to ship only 375,000 units initially. This will most likely cause a mass hysteria in stores on June 6th as customers try to fight for their newest toy. If Palm intentionally tried to limit supplies in order to increase hype, I can picture many people taking resentment to that and deciding not to buy the product, at least initially until prices drop.
My biggest beef with the Pre is that it seems to be just another imitator. Even if the device works well, it still doesn’t offer anything new or different in terms of features (besides the keyboard). I don’t understand why these mobile phone companies keep trying to copy a near perfect device (the iPhone), by creating a usually inferior product that still costs the same as the iPhone. I think that Palm, Samsung, LG, and other mobile phone conglomerates need to start thinking outside of the box and develop a truly unique product. Hell, that’s what Apple did and look where it’s taken them.
