New Jersey Nets to Be Renamed Brooklyn Nyets….

There you go, I got it out of the way. That is the last Nyets joke that I will make. I promise. The Onexim Group, partnered with Forest City Ratner Companies, will help the Nets make their transition to Brooklyn more realistic. The Oxenim Group, headed by Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, will invest $200 million towards the Brooklyn arena, while also buying up around 80% majority interest in the team. I believe that the total investiture is in the $700 million range.

Finally, the Nets have an owner that seems like he is willing to spend money. As unrealistic as this may seem, this transaction may make it slightly more likely that the Nets actually have a chance to land King James, who will appropriately be renamed, Czar James. Think about it. James can come to the Nets, where he can single handily build a mega-billion dollar franchise based around himself. The Atlantic Yards Arena can be known as the “House that James built.” He can take the Nets from zero to hero in an instant. Even if Lebron doesn’t come to Brooklyn, I am still confidant that Mr. Prokhorov will build this team to win. He wouldn’t be investing nearly 3/4 of a billion dollars if he didn’t plan on winning.

The league, particularly commish Stern, obviously loves this move by the Nets because of their ardent desire to expand the NBA globally. For years, they’ve been trying to milk the Yao train with China, and you can only expect them to do the same now with the Nets and their Russian majority interest owner.

How do you think this will all work out?
