Borderlands was released last week for the Xbox 360 and I decided to pick it up on the way home after my exam on Friday. After watching the video review on IGN, I could not resist.
The basic premise of the game is similar to Fallout 3…
There is this desolate land of “Pandora” where you, the main character, resides. You start off by picking a class (Soldier, Siren, Berserker, Sharpshooter) and are dumped into the first desolate village in the game in the Arid Desert. It is really a dump in a really large desert infested by Bandits and Skags which are really like giant pig wolves that attack you. There are also Rakk’s that are kinda like a cross between a pterodactyl and a falcon.
At this point, you start to make friends in the town and do quests, and the story takes off from there.
The game is a first person shooter and the graphics are sort of comic book-like or cartoonish. There is a black halo surrounding everything in the game and the colors are pretty bright and cartoonish. Theres a lot of blood and gore, especially when you blow someone up or blow their head apart. The effects are pretty realistic and true to life.
The gameplay is great. There is loot everywhere – killed enemies drop weapons, ammo, health, money or anything else you can imagine. There are so many different types of weapons, manufacturers, add ons, extensions and elemental powers (the addition of fire, water, electricity or another power). They can also be purchased at shops all around the world.
I’ve only been playing for four hours but the quests are getting really hard. If you die during it, you are given a second chance to kill someone – like in Left 4 Dead. If you succeed, you respawn instantly right there. If not, you respawn in one of the villages by one of the progress marker areas. They’re also pretty intricate involving multiple steps. Each quest earns you experience and money which you can use for weapons, ammo, armor, health and upgrades for the weapons.
When you level up, you receive skill points which you can use to get new skills and new abilities. Each character has their main power ability – the Soldier’s is a turret with a shield that blocks incoming fire. Upgrades can upgrade their ability to increase its power or can give it other powers that enhjance you and your teammates.
Which brings me to the multiplayer function. Although I haven’t tried it, I know there are two great things – you can go through the singleplayer campaign and you can duel each other. Yes, duel, as in the wild west. I can’t wait to try that out. There are even arenas throughout the world where you can duel other players in.
The game is definitely awesome. In terms of storyline, its not Fallout 3. In terms of playability, however, its definitely going to keep me occupied for a long time. Have you played it yet?
