Black Friday

Every year, on the morning after Thanksgiving, sometimes at 5am, people will start to line up at stores to try to take advantage of Black Friday deals. Black Friday is the official start of the Christmas shopping season for merchants in the United States. With the way the economy is this year, you can be sure that more people than ever will be lined up in the freezing cold waiting to pillage through stores in search of the perfect bargain.

I remember, about four years ago, I waited at 6th Avenue Electronics for about two hours in 30 degree weather so I could pick up a new LCD HDTV. Back then, most 32 inch LCD tvs were going for about $800-$1,000. I was able to get mine for about $360. Yes, it was a Syntax television, but still, how can you beat that price? The year before, I picked up a bluetooth headset for my mother. Bluetooth was considered new technology back then, and barebones headsets were going for around $60-$100. I picked up a feature-rich headset for only $10. You can see where I’m going with this. If you’re willing to stand in the freezing cold in the wee hours of the morning, you can get some amazing deals.

Besides standing in the cold, there is another drawback to the Black Friday experience. People are f*cking crazy! When they open those doors, you would think that they were giving away free Ferraris. People go nuts. They run, they push, they bite, and last year, they even trampled. I believe it was at a Wal Mart or Target, in Valley Stream, that someone was literally walked over and killed. Come on people. Are you serious? Is that sale worth more than someone’s life? Get a hold of yourselves. Stores have been trying to come up with new policies to prevent this type of occurrence from happening again. A lot of the time, on products where there are outrageous deals, stores only carry a few of the items. They use these items to draw people into the store, even if they know that they only have 5 units to sell, and there are 500 people waiting outside for that product. To try to minimize liability, stores have started giving out tickets to people while in line, so that they could claim their item before entering the store, in the hopes that people won’t run and try to fight for that last item. We’ll see how that strategy works this year.
