As many of you have seen on television recently, Best Buy has been bombarding viewers with advertisements for a new piece of technology called Powermat. They claim that Powermat is revolutionizing and earth shattering. The device allows you to charge up to three devices (iPod, iPhone, Blackberry, Palm Pre, etc) wirelessly by “simply” placing the item on the Powermat, and watching your device power up. They claim that it is easy to use and that you will never need to carry around a plethora of charging cables ever again. However, there is a catch.
One might ask, “How does this thing charge your electronic device without using any wires and or cables?” Well that’s the million dollar question. In the commercial, Best Buy or Powermat never tells you that you need to buy special adapters for each of your devices in order for them to work with Powermat. These adapters go for around $39 a pop. Therefore, you need to figure that you are dropping $99 on the Powermat, and then around $120 for the 3 adapters. That’s a pretty steep price. For that money, you can buy an extra set of regular power cords to leave at your office so that you can have one set at home and one at work.
Even though this technology is expensive, you have to remember that the price will come down eventually, as all new technology is initially expensive. This device is extremely practical and pretty cool to use. I went over to Best Buy about two weeks ago and tried it out. Powermat has one power cable that runs to an outlet. Once you plug in your Powermat and place the adapters onto your devices, you then place your devices onto the Powermat. There is a sweet sounding beeping noise that lets you know that your devices are now charging. Powermat uses magnetic induction to charge your devices, meaning that it transmits electro magnetic energy from the charging dock, to your devices’ receivers/adapters.
Would I recommend Powermat? If I had the money to spend, probably. The design is sleek and smooth, and the utility provided is awesome. This is the future of charging. For home users, this might be unnecessary, but for a tech-savvy business person who wants to remove the clutter from their desk, this is a must have product. Check it out and let me know what you think.
Here’s a link to Amazon if you want to read up on the specs.
Do you own the Powermat? What do you think of it? Would you recommend it?
