A Solution If You Cannot Install Beta/Other Carrier OS on Your Blackberry?

thanks to http://www.blog37.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/rim-blackberry-tour-sprint.jpgIf you cannot install a beta/hybrid/other carrier OS, then you are at the right place. I have had a lot of problems trying to install OS 5.0.0.417 on my Verizon Wireless Blackberry Tour 9630. However, after searching around, I have found a solution to the problems with installing another carrier’s OS onto your Blackberry device. Keep reading if you want to find out more.

So, in order to successfully install the OS, there are a few steps we need to take. This might seem a little unnecessary, and some of it might be, but there are a few important things in this list that you cannot forget to do. You also need a Windows PC. I did this on Windows 7 64 bit and it worked fine.

First, uninstall any operating systems for your Blackberry that are already installed on your computer.

I then recommend uninstalling the desktop manager and reinstalling it but this is probably unnecessary.

Restart your computer. Run Desktop Manager and back up your Blackberry. Then disconnect it.

Next, install ONLY the OS you want to install. For example, if you want to install the 5.0.0.417 OS for the Blackberry Tour that was released by MTS Mobility, then you should ONLY install that operating system.

Restart your computer.

Next, turn OFF your wireless card. Unplug any ethernet cables to your computer. Make SURE that your computer CANNOT access the internet. This step is imperative.

Now, this is the MOST IMPORTANT step. Goto the search program/function on your computer and search for “vendor.xml”. Now, normally you can just goto C –> Program Files –> Common Files –> Research in Motion –> AppLoader and vendor.xml is there. However, there is another place where the desktop manager will store vendor.xml. I am not sure where it is on each computer nor do I remember where it was on mine, but you HAVE to search for this. I also happened to find a undelete-able file that was named something like “vendor_xml_obtainable” or something. I think it was a file that was able to go and download the vendor.xml file online.

Just to reiterate how important that last step is, make sure that you search for vendor.xml. Also, remember that you delete at least a 2nd vendor.xml that is located somewhere else on your computer. Maybe your computer does not have one but mine did.

At this point, connect your Blackberry. Load Desktop Manager and it should come up and say that there is a update to your operating system. That should be it. If its not working, use loader.exe in the Apploader folder. That should detect a new OS to install to your device. If not, let me know.

Did this work? Did you have a problem with this? Let me know if it did not work. I can search for another solution.

Hope this helps!

I just disabled my ethernet connection (Win 7 64 bit).

After I ran loader.exe with no connection I got some message about my device has no service. I then launched DM 5.x and it showed where I could upgrade the OS but then game me another message about I must go to some website to get the update.

I closed DM 5.x and run loader.exe again (still not connected via ethernet) and I’m now installing the new 5.x OS.

    What a freaking pain.

Interesting. I’ve had similar problems myself… I actually had to do this again last night as well.

    Hey appreciate your blog/ help.

I have followed all the steps above… in the past i was able to change my OS to 5.0.0.314 without a problem.

Im trying to update to the 5.0.0.416 but for some reason its just not working… appl loader nor DM sees that i have a new OS.

I only found one vendor file…. i searched and didnt find anything. I delete DM and attempted APP Loader… nothing. deleted all blackberry files

Using Windows Vista. turned off internet..etc…

    nothing….

What phone are you using? Also, which OS’s do you currently have installed on your computer? Try uninstalling any OSs and DM and reinstalling and see if that helps.

  7. Eric says:

Im using a Bold 9000. I deleted all the OS and have only the 5.0.0.416 downloaded… but maybe i need to look somewhere else?

    I deleted DM now…and re-installing it… so i will try that.

Worked like a charm, I had had many problems installing 5.0 on my sprint tour using BB Desktop 4.7 or even 5.0 but this worked. I think disconnecting from the internet is the key step.

  9. Eric says:

I tried and didnt work….( see above posts)

    Any other ideas? —

Maybe when i downloaded the new O/S on computer.. i need it move it ? or maybe its not reading it?

  10. Jay Booshay says:

hmm.. i would make sure that the only OS you have installed is the one you want to install. What i also read might work is that to install .419 on the tour, sometimes people had to install .230 first (the leaked beta) and then install .419 (both on the computer, not on the blackberry). for some reason, having both OS’s installed on the comp prompted the DM/apploader to recognize the two OS’s and prompt you to install one (of your choice). let me know if that works.

  11. Eric says:

Ok.. i got it to work!! I decided to use a different computer that did not already have any blackberry files on it.

Used Windows XP… downloaded DM manager first… then downloaded the 5.0.0.464 OS for the BOLD 9000…
deleted Vendor file. Restarted computer, disable internet, and ran APP Loader….

APP Loader recoginzed the new OS…………..

thanks sooo much for the help man….!!!!!!

i tried this, still has yet to work on my Tour. everytime i go to update the OS, i do the correct steps, but then when it’s on the loading ROM screen and my blackberry goes to restart, after the red LED comes on, it simply goes out and won’t start back up, i have to remove the USB cable and let it restart with the old OS that was already on it. could it be a problem with the phone itself?

  15. Jay Booshay says:

hmm, i had a problem like this when i tried charging the phone when it was dead. is your phone fully charged? are you running windows on an emulator or did your computer boot into windows? is the phone hooked up directly to the computer USB or via a USB hub?

  16. Joe says:

my phone was fully charged. i’m using a mac with windows in VMFuse and a USB hub. is that really an issue?

  17. Jay Booshay says:

yeah, its a huge issue unfortunately. I returned several “nuked/bricked” reload software error 552 or error 507 because i couldnt reinstall the OS when the problem was really i was running it under emulated OS. bc its emulated, when the phone reboots, it goes to ur mac first. that screws up the process and loses the connection. you need to run it frmo a PC without a hub, plugged directly into the computer. i know it sucks, but its the only way

  18. Joe says:

ahhh thanks a lot. i finally got it to work after so long. just grabbed my moms netbook and got it done.
