This is a review of the Pitbull breed. THEY SHOULD BE ILLEGAL! Yes, I have met one or two calm Pitbulls over the course of my life, but the majority of them are vicious beasts. I don’t buy the nature vs nurture argument with them. They are bred to be killers.
My sister and I took our 9 year old yellow Labrador Retriever to our local dog park for a mid-day jaunt. We thought it would be nice for her to run around and play with other canines. When we got to the dog park, she was the only dog there. Within two minutes, a vehicle pulled up with a Pitbull inside. Two teenagers exited the car with the beast, and proceeded to walk him/her into the fenced in area. The second they let the killer off of the leash, it ran straight for my dog, and began to attack her. When I say attack, I don’t mean bark or nibble. I mean ATTACK. It latched onto her, and was biting with all of its might the side of my dog’s stomach. The owner for the first few seconds did nothing. I had to run over and try to stop it. I clearly could not get this piece of shit dog off of my dog. I yelled to the kid, “Get your fucking dog off.” He eventually pulled his animal off and took it away.
My sister and I were in shock. This was straight out of Michael Vick’s Pitbull operation. Before we could get the asshole’s information, the owners ran to their car and left. We were too busy checking to see if our dog was hurt. Luckily, she wasn’t bleeding but some of her fur was falling out. She’s already a nervous dog, now she was really nervous and anxious.
I am convinced that these things should be made illegal. They are not meant to be household pets. It’s like the assholes that try to own a tiger, train it, say it was well behaved for 10 years, until one day it attacks a neighbor’s kid and seriously hurts them. Certain jurisdictions have laws making it illegal to own a Pitbull. I know some of you out there might own one, and say that they are the best dog in the world, but the majority of them aren’t. And as a social policy, I think that the risks of owning these creatures greatly outweighs any societal benefit provided by them.

The problem is not the pitbull, It the owner of the pitbull. Most people now days that have dogs should not, They dont understand the breed they have chosen, let alone have the time to train it. Yes, it is true when a pitbull bites its alot worse than a Chi chi or even your golden retriver, but they should not be illegal! I understand that they are an intimidating looking breed, and most owners add to this with spiked collarsand harnesses, but they suffer from a horrible reputation. Pitties are ranked higher by the american temperment testing society than your golden! The are great dogs, they just arent for everyone! They are a high energy breed than needs to be socialized at an early age, They also have a high prey drive, lets remember that they were bred for bull baiting. The most decorated war dog in american history was a pitty! I wish people like you would open your eyes and see that bullies arent bad and outlawing them isnt going to make dog attacks decrease or your dog park any safer! Its just that the media has grab ahold of this breed and these are the only attacks that are ever given media attention! You never hear about the lab that attacked a child,or the german shep. that bit, and trust me these happen all the time, but it doesnt make good news like the headline: PITBULL ATTACKS!
So Just open your mind and realize that an animal can only do what its taught, and most dog owners in general dont take the time to train their dogs. Pit suffer daily, people do horrible things to them, they are the breed mostly found in shelters and not because they are bad vicious dogs, but because they were dumped left for dead, tortured, or simply too much for the owner to handle. So dont outlaw pits outlaw bad irresponsible breeders that breed and sell puppies to any one to make a buck, even the punk ass tennager to wants a bad ass mean tough dog. Its not the dogs fault he cant pick his owner or what he is taught by that owner. Punish the deed not the breed!

Pit bull is loving dog that will do anything to please its owner and in the wrong hands it can be turned into “killing machine” the same as it can be the best companion if cared for properly. I have had 2 pit bulls in the past, last of which stays with my parents now(50 year old folks) who love this dog to death. Im raising another pit which is 7 months now and it is true that they require twice as much work as any other breed because they are working dogs and a pit bull needs daily exercise to be happy and well mannered.
None of my dogs in the past 18 years, since i got my first pit, have even once bitten a person or injured any animal. Saying that they are “killing machines” without experiencing the love that pit bulls give to its owner is arrogant and shows how easily people trust stereotypes.

That’s a big problem. Since they have a high prey drive and were bred for bull bating, most people are not capable of dealing with this. The average owner does a mediocre job at training their dogs at best. I’ll go out on a limb here and say that even if ownership of a pitbull does not become illegal, then there should at the very least be some sort of state mandated training required for the breed. You said it yourself. These are high energy dogs, that need to be socialized at an early age. You also said their bites are a lot worse tan other breeds.
You can say what you want about Labs attacking people, but I’m pretty sure that the reason why you don’t hear much about it, is because it happens many times less frequently as compared to a Pitbull attack.

I know that this study combines Pits with Rots but still, Pits accounted for nearly 1/3 of DBRFs. That’s a substantial number.
Statistics aside, I had to witness my dog get viciously and violently attacked for no reason. I was in shock when this happened. I’ve seen dogs fight before, but never like this. If I didn’t try to stop it, and if the owner didn’t get his dog off of mine, I’m 95% certain that the Pit wouldn’t have stopped until it killed my dog. You can tell me whatever you want, but if you witness something like that, we’ll see how you feel.
I think Hempstead NJ has it right for vicious dog requirements:
-muzzled when walked
-kept on a chain with a minimum strength of 300 pounds
-chain not exceeding three feet in length
-must have liability insurance of $100,000.

There is plenty of current date that supports that PitBulls are NOT the most likely to bite dog breed. Just search the internet. It is true that they cause more damage when they do bite or attack. They are faster, stronger & smarter than most breeds and they should be penalized for that… I am a Proud RESPONSIBLE PitBull Owner. However I do believe there should be laws PROTECTING the breed NOT KILLING them.
Punish the owner as you would the parent of a child for mis-deeds. If my child bites & rips of your ear should he be killed? Why should my dog of 10 years? Wouldn’t that be my fault for placing him in that situation or not making sure he knew that was anti social behavior.

It’s all well and good to say it depends on whose hands they’re in. It’s only partially true, and it doesn’t excuse or address the problem. If pitbulls are dangerous in the wrong hands, and there are no laws or restrictions about who can own and breed pitbulls, then we obviously need to find some kind of solution–both to protect people and our pets, as well as the pitbulls themselves. But it’s also true that, because of pitbull’s nature, they can attack even when trained well and raised in a loving environment.
It’s not in anyone’s interest to gloss over the truth. Pitbulls aren’t the demon dog breed some people think they are. Nor are they the perfect family pet others think they are. But when 95% of shelters are filled with pitbulls, you have a problem. When entire states sentence an entire breed to death, like Colorodo did, you have a problem. When animals suffer from puppy mill conditions, you have a problem.

Actually on the contrary they are really smart, they are used by police as drug dogs, and search and rescue uses them to find people in tragedies. I believe people need to do more research on this breed of dog before going by what there stereotype is.

People always blame a the pits but in reality its those stupid owners, for ur information i’ve had pitbulls all my life and not once did my pits ever bit anyone nor including animals. My house was going to be rob onces but if it wasent for my pit i would have probably been shot and so would have my family. Oh and this was in newark by the way. Pitbulls are so lovin and beautiful creature yes they can be one of the most killer animals but that if there are train to do so. I understand where your coming from, it sucks to see your dog getting beat up by another dog but ive had it happen and my dog was a 6 month old brindle pit bull ! He was at the dog park with about 10 other dogs and some mutt mix dog that instead of just sniffing started biting and I got upset and some asshole owner tried to say my dog was the reason why he started biting ( because he was a pit) how does that work!!?? Any dog that isn’t trained right is going to act out! I love all dogs but to be honest your lab is one of the lower end dogs , family friendly , but at the bottom of the smart tree, everyone that I know who has a lab says they love them but there so dumb!!! My mother works as a vet asst. and has told me 80 % of the dogs to come in were pit bulls and she said they were the most well tempered and sweetest dogs you’ll meet, it’s funny cause you see all the shows on tv now are all about how great pit bulls are and they really are great, I would never knock on someone wanting to get a boxer or Doberman but look at some of those dogs , in fact my neighbors boxer always has headgear and I won’t even look at the dog when I walk by cause it goes after everyone who walks by! The last thing I’m going to say or more or less ask is how long was the dog attacking your dog?? There are all ready so many stipulations a pit owner has to face. My pup is only 7 months old and she is not even allowed to go to a dog park because she is a pit. Where I live pits are NOT ALLOWED in dog parks unless they have completed an ADVANCED training class that cost up to 600 dollars? So just because my dog is a pit she can’t play with anyone. She is not allowed in parks with children and if I don’t show proper licensing and PROOF that I ACTUALLY OWN THE DOG she can be taken from me and put to sleep?
I see the way people look at my pup. When she was smaller it was easier to tell people she was a mix but now that she is big there is no mistaking she is nothing but a pure pit. People that say pit bulls are all vicious are ignorant of them. It is not the dog, it is the owners. I work for a vet. I see all types of dogs and ones that are not nice and the ones that are. I am not saying every pit bull is nice, of course not, BUT all different breeds CAN bite. ALL dogs CAN bite. My chuahuha would bite you. I am a responsible owner though. I notice the reply before mine has written that golden ret. is a nice dog. Not saying their not, but I also know one that is a biter. But again, with a responsible owner.
so if you ask me it sounds like these kids may have wanted the dog to attack yours. who in God’s name doesn’t run up and try to help when they’re dog is attacking someone elses. so it is a sad situation that your dog got attacked. but I can tell you from first hand experience that it all depends on how they are raised. as a child I was bitten and attacked by a scottish terrior, my aunt’s dog (a daushound) was mauled by an american eskimo, and my nephew was attacked by a BLACK LAB!!! however in that last case you wanna know what the paper had it reported as?? A pitbull terrior mix. THE DOG HAD PAPERS!! The media likes to stir up drama, therefore they will turn a chihuahua into a pitbull at the drop of a hat. Being the proud and RESPONSIBLE owner of a pitbull terrior and the roomate of another I can tell you this, they LOVE YOU!! ANY dog could have came into that play area and attacked your dog. It has nothing to do with the breed. It has to do with how you raise your pit bull. I’m a pitbull owner and have had no problems with my dog over the past year except excessive licking. THAT’S it.
