Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Demo Review

The Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Demo is out for the Xbox 360 and it definitely has made quite an impression. Being a big fan of the first game, I decided to download the new demo to check it out. I want to get this game when it comes out (March 3rd I think) but I have to wait for a price drop/break. Regardless, keep reading my review if you’re interested.

The demo only consists of one board, Port Valdez, which I think sounds familiar from the old game, but I have not quite been able to put my finger around it. Nevertheless, you are put right into the action. The first huge noticeable difference is the graphics have been vastly improved. The tone of the colors is much more down to earth and realistic with fewer brighter colors and more cold, dry colors that resemble the actual war torn land.

Your HUD is also changed. You can’t find your health anywhere, just a red hue around the outside of the screen that gets darker as you get more hurt. When you turn, there is a slight recoil at the end as if you are really turning and need to focus back in on your target of sight. Your ability to sidestep is significantly slower than running forward, just as reality would be. This is really hard to get used to, especially if you owned the first game. The weapons recoil has been greatly increased and you sway your gun when you are walking, again, just as you would in real life. They really attempted to bring an aspect of realism into this game that was not as prevalent as before. All of this, especially the weapons recoil, makes the game much more difficult to play. I found it much harder to actually kill people because of the recoil, and the control scheme, while largely unchanged, is not the same as other FPS’s, making it more difficult to re-acquaint yourself with.

Weapon sounds are much more accurate in this game and you can hear weapons firing from afar to set the war-torn ambience of the game. Combining the colors with the ambient noise really creates for a much more realistic environment.

Overall, my first impressions have been really good. I can’t wait for this game to be released. The only multiplayer mode they had available was “rush”, the same attack and defend target mode that was in the first game. The new game has new weapon upgrades and new enhancement unlocks not present in the first game. These combined should lead to a completely new playing experience.

What do you think? Let me know if you’ve tried it!
