Blockbuster oh Blockbuster….Oh so stubborn you have been…..Now, people are out of work due to your short sightedness, and your company is on its way out…..
Remember the day when Blockbuster was this shit? There would be lines out the door on Friday nights to rent VHS movies for an affordable (sarcasm) $4.99 for 2 nights. Any small, local, mom and pop type rental place would be put out of business due to Blockbuster’s stranglehold on the rental market…..Those were the days my friend…
Well Blockbuster, how does a dose of your own medicine taste? Blockbuster has been cutting stores, employees, and the like at drastic rates as of recent. They even filed for bankruptcy in Portugal! Watch out! Why is this happening to a company that was once one of the most profitable, lucrative, and dominant players in the entertainment business? Because they were stubborn, cocky, as*holes.
Blockbuster refused to believe that Netflix would ever catch on and become a serious threat. They thought that people did not have the attention span to go online, order their movie, wait for it to arrive, watch the movie, mail it back, and then wait for another movie. Boy were they wrong. And for $4.99/month unlimited rentals, Netflix cost per month what Blockbuster sometimes would charge per night. Okay….so they dropped the ball on that one.
What about online streaming? Did Blockbuster look into that business opportunity? Not until it was too late. Companies like Netflix now allow you to watch certain movies online anytime of the day, as many times as you want. And that feature is included in your normal $4.99/month fee. Then there’s also websites like Hulu that allow you to watch content online, in real time, for free. Interesting….But once again, Blockbuster didn’t think any of this technology would catch on.
What about kiosks? Redbox offers you new movies for $1/night. Blockbuster thought that there was no way people would only want to rent movies for 1 night, even if the price was so cheap. Wrong again….
Blockbuster has almost the same business model as it did 20 years ago. They refused to adapt. They have a Netflix type program now, but who cares, they’re too late. They’ve already lost too much of their market share.
Do you remember the golden days of Blockbuster?

Netflix online streaming is based on Microsoft Silverlight, not Adobe Flash. So it doesn’t work on Mac, right?
