El Vez is a Mexican restaurant located in the dead middle of Center City, Philadelphia. At 13th and Sansom Street, it’s in a great location. On any given night, the restaurant will be crowded with people of all ages either at the bar for their great cocktails or sitting down to enjoy a pretty good meal. Upon entering, you are greeted by the neon hue of the restaurant. After being seated, we were quickly given the menus. The menu was all on one long page, making it easy to find what you wanted. They had several courses but the first thing you have to look at is their guacamole. They have some of the best guacamole I’ve ever had. There are several different kinds of guacamole. We got the “Oaxaca” styled guacamole with oaxaca cheese and it was good. Everything was so fresh and the cheese didn’t taste too rich or cheesy. I am not normally a fan of cheese but it was great. Last time we had the “El Vez” guacamole, which is your pretty standard guac.
Next up was the appetizers. While we didn’t actually get any appetizers, it was hard to not want to. Everything from fish to beef to shellfish to chicken is included.
For my main course, I got the beef tacos. They were great. I asked for it medium and it was grilled perfectly. The meat was tender and fresh and the spices/herbs were also fresh. It was mixed with fresh avocado strips and a salsa type seasoning that was great that blended well with the fresh meat.
Last time I was there, I got the “tacos for two” dish with my girlfriend and basically they brought out a giant bowl of chicken, guac, salsa, tomatoes, lettuce and more all spiced and seasoned for you to share. This was also a treat.
The only complaint I have is that the portions of the entree are somewhat small. However, they bring out a lot of guacamole and chips in the beginning and that fills you up, a lot, especially because it is so fresh.
El Vez is a great Mexican restaurant in Center City Philadelphia. They also have great martinis, cocktails and margharita’s which I didn’t have this time. Have you ever been there?
