Valentine’s Day….another American holiday designed by corporations to get consumers to spend more money.
When you’re single, Valentine’s Day sucks. Listening to bullshit commercials from Jared’s Jewelry, 1800 Flowers, or even Walmart annoys the hell out of me. All of these companies make a ton of their quarterly profit on this one day. This year, according to the National Retail Federation, Valentine’s Day is expected to generate $14.1 billion of sales. That’s insane.
The commercials that these companies place on the air have two purposes/prime targets. One would be geared towards the person who’s in a relationship. These commercials are aimed to get you to think that the only way you can truly express to your significant other how much you really love them is by buying something that puts those feelings into words. How about just saying I love you and meaning it? Shouldn’t that be enough? Secondly, these companies target single people with their commercials. They do this by making singles feel bad that they are going to be alone on Valentine’s Day. Hence, said people then go out to bars, restaurants, wherever, and spend money in an attempt to try to find someone. Either way, you spend money.
Luckily, today, I have my cousin’s Bar Mitzvah. I will be spending the day, eating and drinking my brains out. No I do not have a date, but my good friends Jack Daniel’s, Johnny Walker, and Jose Cuervo will be keeping me entertained. In all seriousness though, if you have someone in your life that you love, let them know it. I miss my former girlfriend tremendously and wish I could be spending this day with her instead of Viennese Dessert Tables. Ayyyyy……..
