How I Kept My Car In Such Good Condition

Over the years, old cars accumulate scratches, impact damage, marks, dings and dangs from rocks that hit it and much more physical damage to its finish. Rain, snow, salt, sand, sleet and more all take its toll as the weather exerts its disastrous effects on your beautiful car’s chassis. However, there are a few steps you can take to ensure that your car’s paint job stays clean and shines like it is brand new.

One of the most basic steps you can take is to keep the car clean by washing it frequently. When I had the time, I used to wash my car every two or three weeks at most. This not only ensured I had the cleanest car of anyone I knew, it removed all of the dirt, chemicals, acids and other corrosive compounds that make it onto your car. Instead of sitting there for weeks, these were all washed away and did not have time to exert their disastrous effects.

Next, make sure you wax your car at least twice a year. I prefer the spring and the fall, mostly for the reason that its easier since my black car dries instantly during the summer and is harder to wax. This will keep the finish in a good condition by removing corrosive elements that soap alone cannot.

Make sure you by a ‘buffing’ compound. This is used to remove dust/tree sap/other dirt that has stuck onto the finish and could not be removed with waxing or washing. It’s a more abrasive type of wax which should not be used for regular wear and tear of your car, only for worse damage. This can also be used on scratches, damage from hitting other objects (cars, poles, etc…). It smoothes it out so that you can then add touch up paint, the next step.

You should use touch up paint to fill in any damages where the entire finish was taken off, like a deep scratch. Touch up paint allows you to fill in scratches so that from far away, it does not appear damaged. Don’t expect any miracles however, from up close it looks like it was painted over.

So there are four steps that you can use to keep your car looking like its brand new. If you follow these simple steps, you should have no trouble keeping your car in pristine condition.
