Yesterday afternoon I went to go see Green Zone, starring Matt Damonnnn (Team America impersonation). Green Zone is a film taking place in Iraq in 2003, right at the start of the war. Matt Damon plays the chief of a WMD team whose job it is to search and locate WMD’s hidden in Iraq. Click below to read more about Green Zone.
Green Zone was an outstanding film. Not quite at The Hurt Locker’s level, but still awesome. Think of it as a more Jason Bourne type of Hurt Locker. Matt Damon’s character, Chief Roy Miller, began to get frustrated after going on countless missions hunting for WMD’s, only to find nothing. He was risking the lives of his soldiers, and wanted to know what was going on.
Greg Kinnear plays a Pentagon Senior official who seems to be feeding poor intelligence to Damon’s team. This intelligence supposedly comes from “Magellan,” a senior officer in Sadaam’s army. As the movie goes on, we learn that Kinnear’s character lied about what Magellan said during a meeting. Kinnear said that Magellan told him Sadaam had a WMD program, but in actuality, there was no program. Kinnear’s lie gave the US justification for the war.
Does all of this sound familiar? Well, it should considering that it’s heavily based on what really happened in Iraq. We went in their initially under the premise that we had to stop their WMDs. However, there never were any weapons of mass destruction, only OIL FIELDS.
The film has some great fighting and action sequences and seems to be accurate as to the portrayal of what life in Iraq is currently like. There was one action scene however that I thought was too long and too out of focus to appreciate what was going on. Besides that, I thought the dialogue was sharp and to the point, the acting was superb, and like I previously stated, the action was top notch. I’d recommend this film to anyone who appreciates a good solid war movie (also to anyone who feels like the war in Iraq is a farce).
