On Saturday night, I saw the acclaimed Broadway show, Mamma Mia! It is a musical based on the music of ABBA, a group from the 1970s. The story revolves around a young 20 year old girl getting married but unaware of the identity of her father, as is her mother. Keep reading my review of Mamma Mia if you’re interested in learning about it.
Mamma Mia takes place in an island off of Greece. The family is supposed to be Greek and the daughter is going to be marrying a Greek man from the island. Its just before the wedding and she invites all three of her mother’s previous sexual partners that could potentially be her father to the wedding without her mother’s knowledge. She hopes to find out who is her actual father.
In the interim, her potential fathers all arrive at the same time. Meanwhile, keep in mind that ABBA is playing during this entire time. The music was actually fantastic. The band is great. While the song selection wasn’t ideal, ABBA also didn’t have too many big hits back in the day, but it was great.
The three older women were the best performers. They all had great voices. Its not often that you see women of that age (at least 40 years old) that are singing actively and acting and dancing. It was pretty impressive.
Anyway, the plot is alright. I am not gonna ruin it but it was a decent show. If you are looking to see a nice broadway show, check out Momma Mia.
