Saturday night, 4/30/2010, a terrorist left a Nissan Pathfinder jeep with gasoline, propane tanks and fireworks sitting in Times Square at 45th Street and 7th Avenue. How did he manage to do this? To get past all of the police officers surrounding midtown with a car full fo explosives? Was this an act of terrorism? What exactly happened? I thought this was America and not the Middle East. We shouldn’t have car bombs here should we?
The car bomb was spotted by a street vendor who happened to notice a suspicious vehicle in times square parked. He then alerted a patrol officer who then requested back up after noticing the explosive materials in the car. The officer then began to clear the area of pedestrians.
How did this car get past all of the officers without ever being spotted? That I do not know. At least some random street vendor found it. What is even luckier is that the bomb was a dud and did not go off. That was out of pure luck and a design mistake by the terrorist. The police said that the explosives could have caused a “fireball.” Can you imagine what damage a “fireball” could do in the middle of Times Square?
At least the police have responded effectively and are actively searching for the terrorist. And yes, it is a terrorist. This is clearly an act of terrorism; car bombs are frequently used in Iraq. Any attempts to downplay it as a criminal act or something else is just semantics.
