We start off tonight with the next to last episode of Lost, ever. With the island on the verge of destruction, the Man in Black out of control, Jack and the group are wandering and our favorite characters dead, what is left? A lot is in for store for us tonight so check out my review, recap and theories on Lost Season 6 Episode 16 – What They Died For.
Tonight starts us off in the parallel universe with Jack eating with his son and Claire. He gets a call from the Oceanic Airlines (which is really Desmond sitting in his car) telling him they found the coffin of his father, but I have a feeling its not going to be Christian. Maybe it will be the Man in Black.
Meanwhile, back int he real universe, Jack ties Kate up from that gunshot wound and she tells him that they have to kill Locke, to which he replies, “I know.” Jack then tells all of them we should go to get Desmond out of that well, since Sayid is dead and told Jack this just before he died (last week). The only ones who made it off of the sub are Hugo, Sawyer, Jack and Kate, so far. We don’t know about Lopeidus. People think he is dead but I don’t know if that is for sure.
Anyway, Desmond in the parallel universe was sitting by the school again for some reason and Ben screams to call the police. Desmond gets out of the car and starts beating him. He told him he was here to save Locke. As he starts beating Ben, there are flashbacks to a previous season and the parallel Ben started to remember about when Desmond was beating him in some previous season (not sure which one).
Ben in the real universe is taking Richard and Miles to his secret room behind his bookcase when all of a sudden they start to hear loud noises. Miles moves to the floor and starts to hear “dead stuff.” Richard then tells Ben that he buried his daughter there, after he left. Some nice, closure music playing in the background added a nice touch.
They enter his old house to get to the secret room that Ben was able to use to summon the monster. Ben gets 6 blocks of C4 out of the cabinet when they hear movement. They find Zoe rifling through his stuff and then Widmore walks in. This is the first time the two of them have seen each other in several years. Maybe Ben and Widmore also have the same kind of rule that Jacob and Man in Black have – they can’t kill each other. If you remember, Ben and Widmore had rules of their game where they could not kill each other directly or their immediate family. It’s possible there is also some sort of same application of that rule.
Hostilities run high between the two of them. Widmore tells him that he saw Jacob and told him everything he needed to know to get back to the island for “this exact purpose” when he is interrupted by Zoe saying Locke is arriving – on a canoe! Hilarious!
The parallel Ben tells Locke about the Desmond incident. He tells him that Desmond said that he wanted to help Locke “let go” and that he had visions when he was being beaten. With only one more week left, I don’t know how they will be able to pull all of this together. Desmond goes to the LAPD office and turns himself in – to Sawyer. This just gets crazier and crazier. Why would he turn himself in? To talk to someone in the cells. Kate and Sayid. What a coincidence. How does he know all of this? What makes him conscious of these connections between the two universes?
Sawyer, in the real uiniverse, starts to admit some guilt about the sub. He thinks that it was his fault and that maybe Jack was right. All of a sudden, the child Jacob demands the ashes from Hugo of Jacob. He came out of nowhere and appeared in the jungle. Hugo runs and finds Jacob. Jacob is waiting for him by a fire burning his ashes. He said when it burns out you will never see him again. Then he tells him to get his friends because they are close to the end. The end of what? The island? Or the world? The theories can keep going on and on. Also, how did the Man in Black see the kid before when Hugo did several episodes ago? But no one else did?
Ben claims he is going to stay behind and confront the Man in Black/Locke. Widmore tells him they are going to kill him and then leaves. Richard says maybe he should try to talk to him and then Miles runs away with Widmore into the underground passage. Richard and Ben left the house to go talk to Locke.
The Smoke Monster all of a sudden appears out of nowhere and throws Richard into the jungle. Holy sh*t, not expecting that one. I hope he’s not dead because that would be a terrible way for him to go. Locke walks over to Ben and tells him he is just the man he is looking for. He then sits down to to Ben, takes out a knife, and tells him he needs him to kill some people for him. Locke asks about Widmore and Ben tells him right where he is – hiding in the closet.
Ben, in the parallel universe, is back with parallel Alex. Alex offers him a ride because his arm is broken. The mother winds up being Rousseau! Great return of an original cast member. She even decides to take him home for dinner, for all that he has done for Alex. He asks about Alex’s father but he died when she was young. Ben takes that really personally.
Back to the real universe. Ben is about to bring Locke into the closet. Locke doesn’t want him to come in but Ben insists that he “wants to see this.” Widmore and Zoe are now confronted by Locke. All of a sudden Widmore tells Zoe not to say anything and Locke kills her – slashes her throat with a knife. Then Locke tells Widmore when he gets off the island that the first thing he will do is kill Penny, unless Widmore tells him why he came back here. He brought Desmond because of his resistance to eletromagnetism as a measure of last resort – and after Ben walks away – Locke tells him to whisper. Then Ben shoots Widmore and adds – “He doesn’t get to save his daughter.” Damnit!!! Everyone is dying on the show. Ben is really in on it now. He must really want to get the island all to himself. I was really hoping Ben would be good in the end, but he really managed to screw everything up again.
I don’t like how they are killing everyone so quickly. Usually shows do it progressively but this is all at once.
Meanwhile, Hugo gathers everyone and this time they can see Jacob – he isn’t invisible anymore. Kate is upset and wants to know why Sun and Jin and Sayid died. Jacob invites them to sit down to explain everything – and why they were chosen. And then to tell them everything they need to know about protecting the island because when the fire burns out, one of them is going to have to start to do it. These are the candidates, and this is the beginning of the end.
In the parallel universe – Locke visits Dr Shepard again, even though he did not want his help in the beginning. Locke starts explaining the connections – that they met on the plane, the hit and run, Desmond, the fact that they want him to “let go” – and that this all might be happening for a reason. That maybe Jack is supposed to fix him. Jack thinks he is mixing coincidence for fate. But Locke wants to go ahead with the surgery.
Jacob starts explaining the story – he made a mistake and there’s a chance that everyone can die. A monster, and he is responsible for what happens because he made him that way and he has been trying to kill him this whole time. Now, we need a replacement. That is why they are here.
Sawyer wants to know why he has to be punished for Jacob’s mistake. But Jacob says everyone was flawed – no one had a happy existence. Everyone was like him – all alone – looking for something they could not find out there. Kate was crossed off because she became a mother, but she can still have the job.
The job? A light at the center of the island. Making sure it never goes out. Protecting it from Locke/Man in Black. They have to kill him. Jacob doesn’t even know if it’s possible but guarantees that he will try to kill them. Jacob wants them to have a choice. If no one chooses it? This ends very badly.
Jack volunteers – he is recognizing his destiny. It’s his fate to be the one to stay. He has finally realized it after 6 seasons. He immediately volunteers for it.
Jacob tells him that beyond the bamboo field that he woke up when he first got here – is the heart of the island. Jack doesn’t think that anything is out there but he insists there is. Jacob breaks out some water from a little creek – holy water? Then Jacob tells him that he is like him. All of that from drinking a cup of water.
Back to the LAPD, Desmond, Sayid and Kate are being shipped out to county. Inside the transport Desmond says, “I think it’s time to leave.” Sayid calls him a crazy person who turned himself in. Desmond agrees. He said the driver knows where to stop. And then Desmond says that they need to trust him and that when he frees them he will ask them to do one thing and they have to promise they will do it. And who is the driver? Anna Lucia! Nice return. They are out on the docks. A Hum Vee pulls up with Hurley – to pay her off. He knows who she is even though she doesn’t. Desmond says she isn’t ready yet. Desmond takes Kate to a concert and Sayid is going with Hugo. I wonder how this is giong to turn out. Desmond has to get to Penny soon.
Locke takes Ben to the well he threw Desmond into. But Desmond is not there. Sayid betrayed him. But we knew that from the start. Ben asks what Widmore said. Desmond was the last way to make sure that Locke couldn’t leave this place. But Locke needs him to destroy the island. And that’s where it is cut off. That’s crazy. Why would he tell everyone he wanted to leave when he really meant to destroy it?
And how did Jacob ever get off of the island to meet all of them before they were on it? They never explained that.
I think that somehow, Locke will pass his powers onto Ben and Ben and Jack will be fighting for the island for the rest of time. And that’s how it will end – we’ll never know what happens.
