Red Dead Redemption – Is it Just GTA 5?

Red Dead Redemption came out three weeks ago for the Xbox 360 and I have been playing as much as I can (which has been very little). I noticed a lot of similarities to GTA, a whole lot. Can you say that Red Dead Redemption is just GTA 5? Or is it really a new game? Keep reading my comparison of GTA and Red Dead Redemption to find out.

1. The Controls – The controls really make RDR just another GTA. The same buggy, jerky lock up system used to find cover remains in it and was one of my biggest problems with GTA 4. It was almost unusable and it was unnatural and it is continued in RDR.

2. The Ergonomics – The menus are basically identical carbon copies of each other, except that there is a start up screen instead of just loading and immediately launching you into your game. However, the rest of the menus, even the statistics section, are basically identical between the two games.

3. The Gameplay – Besides the terrible cover system, there are a lot of aspects that are similar. Targeting, movement, and combat all share similarities between the two games. However, riding horses is drastically different than riding cars. There are also a lot of differences – side quests, experience challenges, the “fame” system and more that make this more of an adventure/RPG than just a shooting game. They have taken a lot of points from games like Mass Effect and incorporated them into the universe. There is also a “leveling” system as you progress through the single player, and jobs so that you can earn extra money.

4. Multiplayer – While similar, there are huge differences. There is a free roam system where you basically have the entire land to explore. There is an actual leveling system that progresses in a chronological fashion depending on how much experience you get. You get new weapons as you level up, and more. There is a “posse” feature where you can join with your friends into a posse and go around and fight gang hideouts (CPU controlled enemies that protect one of their bases) and other players. You can find and fight other posses. You can join smaller multiplayer matches of varying game types that are team based or FFA. The multiplayer is really great.

5. The Engine – It’s the same engine and it is a little disappointing. I was hoping they would come up with something new but unfortunately they didn’t.

So what’s the verdict? Overall, it is definitely a different game than GTA. And it’s awesome. Let me know what you think.

Are you serious? Have you actually played this game? It is amazing and I have only done like 2 missions. It annoys me when people say they are disappointed by the graphics of games, etc. What more do you want? Look at the horses muscles tense as it runs then come back and tell me that you are disappointed… Or just get rid of your shitty SD tv..

Well I definitely love the game, maybe I should have made that more clear. The only disappointment I have is that they did not update the now outdated GTA engine from three years ago at least. I would have been nice for anything new.
