What is Wikileaks.org?

I recently saw an article on CNN about Wikileaks.org and decided to try it out. I had never heard about it before but it seemed like it would be an interesting site. have you ever heard about Wikileaks.org? It is an online website under which whistleblowers can annonymously submit classified documents which made available to the public.

After navigating to the site, you have many options. Latest leaks, recent analyses, in the news, latest tweets, are just some of the options. THe site is set up the same as wikipedia.org, so you can search for files or other releases or you can simply browse through them as well. The front page contains the “latest leaks” which is a section with the most recently linked documents, communications and more between different governments or within the government.

For example, the document “U.S. Intelligence planned to destroy WikiLeaks” was released on March 15th this year and details a plan the government had to take down the website. Several other countries have blocked access to it, another interesting tidbit of information.

However, popular support seems to be behind the website as people feel the government should be more open overall. This is a new way for whistleblowers to release sensitive info and remain anonymous at the same time, not putting their job or lives in jeopardy. The submission process is anonymous, highly encrypted with bank-level encryption codes, and submitter’s identities are protected under Swedish ID protection laws, which are much, much more strict than our laws.

I think this is a great idea. Whistleblowers will be able to leak sensitive material to the public without fear of retribution. What do you think about that?
