Starcraft 2 Multiplayer Differences From Single Player

If you haven’t played Starcraft 2 yet, you should definitely pick up a copy. The multiplayer aspect of Starcraft 2 is much different than the single player game. There are significant gameplay changes that make the two modes completely different. I recently played a match as the Terrans with my roommate against a computer player, and I can comment on the diferences between Starcraft 2 singleplayer and multiplayer.

  • No firebat for Terrans – The Terrans do not have a Firebat in Starcraft 2 Multiplayer. The Marauder seems to take the place of the heavy infantry and the Hellion takes the place of a fire unit. Note that both of the new units are in singleplayer.
  • No medic – The medic has been replaced by a transport medevac air unit which performs the same function and transports units. However, the medic and a separate transport exist in singleplayer.
  • No Goliath – This is huge and is really a disappointment. There is no Goliath unit in multiplayer for whatever reason.
  • Zerg have a lot of units – The Zerg have a lot of units compared to the Protoss and the Terrans, and this was unexpected with all of the units cut out of the Terran multiplayer.
  • No multi-SCV/Drone/Probe building – You can’t have multiple units building a building like in the single player. Instead, its back to the old 1 unit per building mode.
  • No Wraith for the Terrans
  • Terrans get the Banshee – A ground attacking, cloaking air unit
  • The changes are a little disappointing but they are livable. What has your experience been? Did I forget anything?

Yeah what’s the deal with that? I was wondering why they single player features didn’t carry over to multi…I figured maybe it’s an unlockable feature or achievement you have to get before it works in multiplayer…that would have been interesting. But if they just flat out didn’t transfer them to multi that I don’t understand…why not? What purpose does that serve? Maybe they’ll release a patch that fixes it?

    2. Asagrim says:

Forgive me if i am wrong … but i can’t seem to find Diamondbacks either. This is an utter disappointment for me, 90% of the troops i actually used in the single player campaign aren’t even available anywhere except the story mode, not even in skirmish games. For the time being i am stuck with reloading particular mission maps if i want to play “skirmish” with the units i want.

    3. kev says:

maybe they wanted to make single player and multiplayer completely different games, and different experiences. the multiplayer is more about the balance and competition, whereas in single player you can revel in all the cool stuff you can build and the varying situations you can navigate with the extra features and stuff.

    4. uber says:

Well, it’s all about balance, yes. For every unit they kept, they’d have to make a ton of changes to counter units. Like take the firebat. I had a single firebat and medic, and I took out roughly 5 or 6 clumped zerglings with those two. That’s the equivalent of 100 minerals and I think 75 gas taking out 150 minerals worth of zerglings. Which would be a fair trade… had my firebat and medic died. Yet, they lived without a scratch, since the firebat completely obliterates zerglings. In a later part of the match, I had two firebats and two medics who held off an army of zerglings, in the end succumbing to the masses after taking out about 14 zerglings. That’s a trade off of about 350 minerals vs 200 minerals and about 100 gas. Now I admit this was probably not the best of deals, but still, four units took out four times as many. And I’m sure if my damn medics had been doing their job instead of running towards the nearest sunken colony, I’d have done much more damage, and maybe even survived against the mini army.

      So yeah… diamond backs…

You build a bunch of them, and get your opponents to follow you. You can see why that’s overpowered. This game is basically built so that no unit is insanely powerful against another unit of the same price range. So, while a collosus will obliterate a small army of zerglings, the same collusus will have trouble dealing with an equal cost of marauders and medics.

The only other time that an ‘imbalance’ will occur is an actual balance. For example, a banshee being at the mercy of a scout (that imbalance is a checks n’ balances type thing).

Now, on the other hand…. those damn carriers… well that’s a different story. lol

I am very disapointed with the fact the terran do not get goliaths in multi. The terran dont have any worth while anti-air units other then mariens and vikings. Plus, the medics should still be used in multi for the fact that its harder to get off a rush attack having to use medivacs. So far I have no real complaints for the protoss or zerg however I do miss lurkers.

    6. Roland says:

I’m disappointing about no medic in multi game as well.
When we think about balance, we need to consider not only the unit but the building that required to build the unit. Let’s use the 1 firebet + 1 medic vs 5-6 zergling. To build the zergling, all I need is the spawning pool( which is same price as Terren barrack), so 6 zergling are cost 150 mineral.
On the other hand, to build a firebet and a medic, you need to build not just the barrack but also it’s add on (which is 50 mineral + 50 gas) and a refinery (75 mineral) so the sub-total are 225 mineral + 120 gas.
Also, time is money, obviously, building 1 firebet + 1 medic is taking much longer (don’t forget the time cost of constructing building).
      Therefore, 1 firebet + 1 medic should be a sure-win against 6 zergling, since it’s 225 mineral + 120 gas +extra time consumption vs 150 mineral.
Also when we are talking about a human vs human game, micro-control is significant to the result. Think about it, cpu player will order its unit to attack whatever units are attacking them, that’s why your firebet and medic can be unharmed. However, a human player will (should) order his 6 zergling to attack the medic (I’m sure it will kill the medic) and harm the firebet (about few bites) — of course the player need to do extra micro-controlling, not just press A and right click.
In conclusion, I think keeping the medic should still balance.

    7. voloap says:

WHAT A MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT!! they should’ve just made new units for protos and zerg. i am bummed out by this. Goliaths and medics had major roles in my strategies. :(

    8. Shadowstep says:

I like this move only because i have seen the results of balancing pve and pvp in World of warcraft, balancing it so that they are both balanced is far more difficult than balancing them separately. I suspect that in the 2 expansions you will see more units added. But they want to be able to balance things in the multiplayer without taking from the fun/cool factor of singleplayer.

    9. Derek says:

Yeah, probably a way for them to ensure people will buy the expansions. Some people can live without the single player, but if the expansions add units to the multiplayer then those people will feel like they need to buy it.

      • Jay Booshay says:

Didn’t think about that. But I would be pretty pissed if they didn’t include the units only to put them in an expansion. That would be pretty dick. What do you think?

    10. SuprmanV2 says:

well considering that they don’t have a single player for protoss or zerg they havent been able to develop any extra units like they have in the terran story line right? so im sure when they release the single play for the other races they will probably update the multiplayer with all the units that are available in single player

    11. Gregstar says:

If you had the company and you new 1 year before the release that the game will sell eitherway to millions of people whould you keep some units for expansions to get sure money? Its totally obviews that this is marketing. Dont try to find idealistic excutions like: balance, multiplayer has that, single player has this, etc. Its only a matter of money. The game is great and they know it!! So they take advantage of it. Its numbers. If 1000000 people buy it for 59 euros, then 1000000 people will pay for 20-25 euros for sure, for expansion. So much more safe money. Its simple as that!

    12. Gregstar says:

Its a common tactic for “must have” games.

      • Jay Booshay says:

What do you guys have to say about that? Would you pay for expansions?

        • DieGo* says:

I think I would pay for those expansions, although gritting my teeth big time. After all, the game is great, as someone said already. On the other hand, I’m more than willing to pay a little extra cash for a quality game from a quality game corporation such as Blizzard – never before have I been disappointed with Blizzard’s products, not in a serious way, anyway.

Of course, even StarCraft II has it’s disadvantages, for example the stiffness of the character’s when they move around in cutscenes, and the clichés used in their conversations.

Take Jim Raynor’s comment at that scientist geekboy at one point of the games’ cutscenes.
“Just try not to blow up the ship, okay, Stetmann?”
I mean, oh my god, it’s so lame line and it’s been used since day One in the history of the videogames. I’m sure you get my point here, tho, despite all my ranting.

So yeah, I’d pay for those games, although gritting my teeth a little. StarCraft II is a good game with its disadvantages, but sure as hell I’m more willing to buy Blizzard’s game-which-is-divided-into-three-expensive-parts than Bethesda’s Fallout 3 which is lame as hell and into which you can download parts and content for free.

      Very disapointing.

Spent the first 3 days finishing the single player mode and had great fun with that, especialy liked many of the special objectives.
After that i tried a single multiplayer battle and discovered that most of my favorit unit are not availeble
and i havent player it since.
Not what i was expecting after waiting for this game for so long.

      Single player mode: Thumbs up
      Multiplayer: Big thumbs down

Hope they will remove these unit restrictions in future updates.

    14. Simon says:

Well… think about BroodWar… was anyone of you disappointed that they not only published a new campaign but also included some great new units? The development of such a game is extremely difficult… sure, it’s mostly about the money, but there is also a reason why SC2 came out so late. It takes a lot of time to balance MP to the point where South Koreans can’t simply overwhelm their opponent no matter what if they choose [pick your favourite imbalanced race here].

I have played SC1 and BW from the very beginning. It took YEARS to balance the game perfectly. And in the end, there were patches changing extremely minor things like the cost of a ComSat scan. This can determine the outcome of a match! So a) I wouldn’t complain about the MP limitations. You don’t have the installation environment with its fire turrets in SC1 MP, either. SP is all about telling a nice and interesting story — SC2 does this remarkably well, mixing visual and menu elements from SC1 and Archimedean Dynasty/Aquanox 2. It is only just to assume that it contains elements not suitable for MP. Not only the firebat (my all-time favourite unit in SC2!!) but also the different types of tanks available to the AI opponent, the trains from The Great Train Robbery, the Merc Facility, the artefacts etc.

I think the game is fine as is. But then again, I’m not South Korean, so I can’t judge MP from that point of view.

    15. Simon says:

One note, though: LAN mode would be awesome (for me the last requierement to make me buy the game instead of using the guest account)!!! With the option to CHOOSE whether you get the unit set from MP or SP, of course.

      • Jay Booshay says:

Yeah, the lack of LAN play sucks, I have to play through the net with my roommate in my apartment, which is completely ridiculous. And Broodwar introduced new units, not just re-introduced SP units into MP, which is why it is differnet. Unfortunately some people will approve and others will be upset.

    16. Hello buddy!! I really want to know about it and after many searches i have found it on your blog.. Really this helps me a lot. Thanks for sharing it.

    17. Commando says:

Well, I loved the campaign and reaaaally was looking forward to use all the units and upgrades when I finally played skirmish or MP. I just played my first skirmish and, like someone mentioned above, I got really disappointed and sort of lost the will to play like that.
If it’s either a balance or money thing, it sucks having seen all those cool stuff and not being able to use it.

    18. Marshall says:

      Hi,
no LAN, limited units in skirmish/multi = no buy for me
      The campaign is 8/10 though.

    19. Nate says:

This multi-player is weak! No special assassins (if you didn’t choose ghost in single and went with spectre), no hercules massive transports, no wraiths, no firebats, diamondbacks, or even vultures! Goliaths are gone and most of the terran players are ticked. Why in the world would they bring in a new game and replace old favorites (that clearly still have a place if you play 1v1) with ridiculous units like the Thor and Medivac (which doesn’t even heal until it stops moving!!). I’m severely disappointed with this version. On a side note does anyone else think there is a lot of micro required for a “build em and smash them” kind of game?

    20. Oliver says:

I think I know why they didn’t include the units.

Think about it. SC2: Wings of Liberty only really has the Terran campaign, during which you unlock various units. Since there is no full campaign for either zerg or protoss in wings of liberty, you wouldnt have the opportunity to unlock their units. So, allowing the Terrans to use all of these units unlocked in single player campaign, would put all the other races at a disadvantage.

What I foresee is this. As they release the Protoss and Zerg campaigns, and you complete these and unlock the units in the other races, then they will probably all be available (eg goliaths and firebats in multiplayer).

    21. Skipper says:

It’s not about marketing at all. It’s about simplicity. There is no point in having the firebat when you have the helion. Both are about the same except the helion is mech and not bio. For the Goliath, the Viking takes care of it’s role. It is mech walker and a pretty good anti air unit. The Goliath would be over powered anyways. The Thor is an upgraded version of the goliath. It’s mech and does both anti air and ground damage but it is limited by it’s cost. With all of the extra units from the campaign added to what the online already has would make it too complicated to counter or decide way the right choice is. The game is perfect the way it is and I’m sure they will add 1 or 2 more units to each race with the upcoming installments, but for now the units we have are fine. This also makes the transition from brood wars to sc2 for the pros a lot easier. You have to think about the huge pro circuits and how bad that would throw everything off with all of the new units.

      • Fan of Starcraft says:

Some people say hellion is great than firebat…but can hellion go to bunker? If firebat have the stimpack like the 1st SC the hellion wasn’t so fast… in atack u can use medics and medivs to cure firebat but do u go with a scv to cure a hellion or return 2 base and lose time repair…????
Goliath have is better then Viking because can shoot simultaneous in air and lan troops (with upgrade) the viks only air if wish shoot in lan u need change….

I wish firebat, and goliath come back to multiplayer its more fun and 4 me i use in bunker 3 marines/ghosts + 1 firebat in defense
