At 10am EST today, Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook announced its new social messaging feature named “Social Inbox.” Social Inbox doesn’t reinvent email according to Zuckerberg, but it does make the usage of it and other social messaging tools more efficient. According to Facebook, Social Inbox will revolutionize the way people communicate. Click below to read more of our review of Facebook Social Inbox.
Zuckerberg mentioned that part of the reason he initiated the engineering of Social Inbox was because high school students had told him that email is too formal, takes too long to type, is stuffy, and isn’t instant enough. Zuckerberg took those comments to heart, and had his engineering team come up with possible solutions.
Social Inbox combines email, instant messaging, SMS all into one system. It will keep track and records of everything you say so that you can access it later. Facebook will even offer you an @facebook.com email address (if you wanted one). You can import your IMAP email addresses as well.
The best part about Social Inbox is that is streamlines all of the different messaging programs. If I receive an IM and want to respond in email, I can do that. If I receive a facebook chat and want to respond in AIM, I can do that. Pretty cool if you ask me.
